After around fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the pupils in her classroom that after she tallies the results, she will present her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to go over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 10 or 20 seconds, almost every student in the class raised his or her hand. It was evident that the pupils had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, just about every pupil disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, that is to say, "Do you feel exceedingly nauseous when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to her pupils why this answer was the most correct sign of alcohol addiction. She emphasized the fact that the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
In essence this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent all of a sudden quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the pupils started to comprehend the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had stimulated and encouraged the pupils in her class to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
