A Young Male Requires Therapy For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Chemical Dependency
Approximately eight months ago I had dinner with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from intense depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As explained by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship problems.
As articulated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical issues that he in actual fact has little or no driving force to accomplish much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished three semesters of grad school in entrepreneurship.
Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and see his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something healthy about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is an individual who has to hit life's bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehabilitation that results in long-term sobriety.
It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are a number of recently produced physician-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is completely nothing productive about chemical dependency and unhealthy and excessive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the road to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship difficulties might help him manage these mental health difficulties more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Since Benjamin lacks the willpower to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is clear that he definitely needs a little hope for a healthier existence. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he requires for his acute depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and continue with his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to refrin from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug therapy and get the treatment he requires for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.
More meaningful relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a meaningful life are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to get the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in an alcohol and drug-free and healthy way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his life.
