It took more than a few years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had it with her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking. She was drained from seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking instead of spending time with her and their three sons. She was also worn-out from the third DWI Keith recently received. In addition she was exhausted from manufacturing reasons for her husband when he couldn't make it to his job due to his careless and excessive drinking.
Not only this but she was worried about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking. And finally she was drained from the precarious financial situation into which he had put his family because of his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.
One Wednesday morning when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something constructive to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's careless drinking behavior. So Sarah looked online under "alcohol rehabilitation" and found scores of treatment facilities that were all located less than 15 miles away from where she and her husband lived.
When Sarah called each treatment clinic she identified who she was and said that Keith, her spouse, was involved in unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. She also stated that Keith had an excellent health insurance at work and that outpatient or residential alcohol addiction rehab would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health plan initiated the rehab.
After listening to Sarah go over her husband's careless drinking, the therapist in a helpful but resolute manner told Sarah how she may have played a role in her husband's careless and abusive drinking through the years. How? Essentially by making excuses for him instead of allowing him to experience the consequences of his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.
Stated another way, the physician told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. The healthcare professional also highlighted the point that Sarah could not control Keith's behavior. With the support and encouragement of the treatment team at the healthcare facility, nevertheless, she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Keith's careless and hazardous drinking but she could also learn how to help him make an appointment at the rehabilitation clinic so that he could discuss his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior with a healthcare professional.
Fortunately after Sarah revealed this to her husband and he saw that she meant business, he told her that he had been quite uneasy with his careless drinking behavior and that he was somewhat pleased to discover that Sarah wanted to do something productive about his careless and hazardous drinking behavior. As a result, he scheduled an appointment to see a psychologist at the local alcohol rehabilitation clinic.
While simply calling a treatment facility does not mean that an individual's careless and hazardous drinking behavior will stop or that an individual will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, calling for an appointment is certainly a necessary factor in the rehabilitation process. And because Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting rehabilitation for his abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was substantially augmented.
