Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was displaying numerous alcohol-related issues at school. For that reason, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist, before he would be allowed to return to class.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school expulsion to his Mother and Father. His Mother and Father were "fairly conventional" and explained to Stephen that getting discharged from school was not a viable educational plan of action. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would more likely than not be like a lead weight around his ankles that may hamper his educational aspirations for the remainder of his adult life. Furthermore, Stephen's Mother and Father were quite saddened that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his pals in the second.
It was obvious that his Mom and Dad were on the same page as Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better come to the understanding that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his dialogue with his parents, Stephen at last agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next afternoon after school.
When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she at once looked at all of the alcohol-related issues Stephen had experienced and asked him if he comprehended why his recent alcohol-related activities caused quite a bit of concern by the school administrators.
Quite frankly, Stephen wondered why the principal told him he had to see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking circumstances? Due to the fact that virtually all of his pals drink as much if not more than he does, essentially, drinking is no big issue. Stated more forcefully, if almost everybody is drinking, why is this such a major concern?
In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to thwart his ability to act like a responsible young man. As stated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink hard liquor, wine, beer, or wine coolers does not mean that it's the appropriate behavior for you."
Luckily, Miss Pender was well prepared for her scheduled time with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had underlined that listed various drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of figures and reports that applied especially to teens.
After Miss Pender listed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was apparent that what Miss Pender revealed to Stephen was a real shock to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to articulate the long term and the short term consequences of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, but she also made the effort to authenticate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics that related to everybody in general, and principally to adolescents.
As a matter of fact, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen immediately comprehended why he should not be engaging in hazardous and abusive drinking with or without his pals anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she went over and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
