This is most often used when the stones have moved out of the kidney and into the ureter.
A process known as a PCNL, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy, is one kidney stone treatment that is more invasive. The surgeon may do this procedure for larger kidney stones. With this procedure, the surgeon makes a cut in the patient's back and inserts a narrow telescope into the kidney. The surgeon will then break the stone up and remove it. This procedure is used in cases of very large stones or in the event that the lithotripsy does not work.
Even though rarely used, in some cases the surgeon may also make a cut in the side so that he can reach the kidneys. This allows him to easily remove the stone. This kind of kidney stone treatment is rarely needed.
It is not uncommon for a person that has formed a kidney stone and has had a kidney stone treatment to produce more stones in the future. Roughly half of the people that have a kidney stone will develop another one within 5 years unless measures are taken to prevent them.
