Smallish Breed Dog Toilet Training
Precisely why dog lovers have got this preconceived notion that small dogs are more challenging to train than medium sized or larger breed canines, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be a problem.
Small dog training, is not all different from training a dog of any other size. While training any dog will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, invariably all other aspects remain the same, and the approach to training the canine should stay the same, irrespective its size.
Having said that, I will stray from the rule here, and accept that small dog training may offer problems in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the dog is small breed, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.
If a small breed puppy is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a small breed puppy dog cannot be potty trained or poses difficulties in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unwittingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us examine how and why.
Aggression.
Small dogs are enjoyed because they are cute, they are like dolls. Owners enjoy having their pet sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the complication commences. The natural aggressive trait of the puppy, is to claim ownership over its world, its food, even its master; all canines want to be the alpha dog.
It is the violent streak in the puppy that causes it to climb on to the lap of its mistress, above all when there are a good number of people gathered in the room.
This is a blatant act of hostility. Instead of chiding the animal, every owner bar no one, would hug the dog, notwithstanding that it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, developing the aggressive streak in the animal. Therefore the owner has okayed the dog's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a a bigger size dog is another outright act of aggression. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is looked on as cute, simply because one dog is tiny while the other is big. Most owners cuddle the pup instead of admonishing it, when it stands this aggression against a larger dog.
The above are but examples as to why smaller breed puppies are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is complicated.
Potty Training.
Owners are inclined to tote their small dogs around no matter where they are, even at home and that renders it impossible to potty train them
It comes natural to the owners of miniature breed dogs to lug the animal to the area where the puppy should do its dirty business and then carry it back into the house.
It is this habit of carrying the puppy to the outdoors to poop that is the cause of all complications. In addition, ever since the pup is as a general rule carried around such a lot it has no way of it indicating to or alerting the owner that it has to go the toilet.
Small dog training starts off with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be taken to their bathroom area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no problems in training them.
Dog crate training, is the best part of dog training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
